Fairfield’s historic roots reach back to 1639, when its vast sweep of the salt marsh inspired the subsequent naming of both the town and its county. Rebuilt after being torched by the British in the Revolutionary War, treasured traces of the Colonial past remain within this suburban coastal town just a 60 minute train ride from New York City.
 
Along the 8 miles of coastline, you will find 5 public beaches and the quaint village of Southport which is perched over the harbor dotted with boats and a private sailing club. In July 2006, Money magazine ranked Fairfield the 9th “best place to live” in the United States and the best place to live in the Northeast. It is truly scenic sophistication on Long Island Sound.
 

Educational Facilities

Excellence in education is the watchword of the Fairfield Public School system, with its ten elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools and a Learning Co-Op. Fairfield also offers many fine undergraduate level private schools and is home to Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University. Both of these universities also provide an active cultural calendar with the arts thriving through tremendous local support.
 

Recreational Facilities

Recreational opportunities abound at the town parks and playgrounds with programs for soccer, track/field, all weather tennis, golf, sailing, swimming, boating, skating, baseball, football, basketball, and bocce. Fairfield has several options for indoor and outdoor tennis, both public and private facilities and also for golf with a 36-hole, 18-hole and par-3 course.
 
The town’s 115-acre Lake Mohegan affords summer swimming and winter skating. There are 5 pristine beaches to choose from: Jennings, Penfield, South Pine Creek, Southport and Sasco–all are supervised by trained lifeguards from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Boating facilities at South Benson Marina and Ye Yacht Club in Southport provide moorings, slips and storage. The quaint downtown offers an array of fabulous restaurants, outdoor cafes and plenty of boutique shopping, a town that offers it all!
 

Culture

The Fairfield Historical Society Museum offers a wide range of activities for children and adults, including ever-changing gallery exhibits throughout the year. The Regina Quick Center, at Fairfield University, presents a full schedule of musical, dance and theatrical events, lectures, student productions and summer theater camps for children.
 
Additionally, the Evening of Music, Jazz and Young Audience Series entertain all age groups. The Art/Place at the Southport Train Station, is a not for profit gallery with 26 members. The gallery exhibits change every month and is often the setting for dance, musical performances and lectures.
 

Transportation

Fairfield Metro-North commuter rail service accesses Manhattan, as do Interstate Route 95 and the Merritt Parkway. Neighboring Bridgeport provides ferry service to Port Jefferson, Long Island.
